Using the off season to build strength out of the pool is a great way to swim stronger during the season- but also help prevent injury.For most swimmers the majority of your propulsion through the water is driven by your upper body. Meaning that when injury or inflammation prevents you from using the full strength of your arms, you are losing more speed in the water than a leg injury would cause. With shoulder injuries and inflammation being one of the most common afflictions in swimming due to the countless repeated motions of any stroke, it is important to strengthen and protect against the potential for injury. The correction of improper technique is another thing that can be important in injury prevention. Improper stroke over the course of a single training session is nothing to worry about, but repeated consistently over hundreds of hours can lead to problems that could have been easily avoided.
