How to Protect Yourself From the Summer Sun
Whether at practice or meets swimmers are at higher risk for sunburns and skin cancer than other athletes. Here are a few ways to stay sun-safe year round.
Apply sunscreen- 30 SPF or higher- 20 minutes before getting into water.
Cover up- whether in the water or waiting on deck. Wear a long sleeve swim shirt, hat & sunglasses. Remember the water can reflect and intensify the suns rays.
Check your skin often.
Limit your time outside.
Cool shower or bath.
While your skin is still damp use a moisturizer that contains aloe vera or soy to help soothe sunburn. Drink water to prevent dehydration caused by the burn.
Consider taking aspirin or ibuprofen to help reduce any swelling and discomfort
If your skin blisters it means you have a second-degree sunburn.
Do not pop the blisters, they form to help your skin heal and protect from infection.
Keep blisters clean by applying petroleum jelly to protect them while they heal.
